Do Plants Die?  Why Does It Matter?

Christians who believe in millions of years of earth’s history have no option but to believe that animals and humans died before sin.  This is because the fossil record, which is supposed to be the record of millions of years of history, is made up of bones, and this record is full of disease, violence, and bloodshed.  It is a horrible record.

The Bible makes it clear that everything was very good at the end of the creation: there could not have been death or bloodshed in the world.  In fact, Genesis 1 tells us that the animals and man were vegetarian.

Some Christians still try to cling to an earth that is millions of years old claiming, “Plants died before sin, so there was death before man fell.”  But plants are not alive like animals.  The Hebrew word nephesh refers to the “life spirit” that man and animals have.  But plants do not have this gift of the Lord.  In fact, the word nephesh is never used of plants.  Plants were given for food, and they are not alive in the sense animals are alive.  Plants, for example, don not have a brain to sense pain like humans and animals do.  Also, you never see a plant die in the Bible.  They only wither or fade.

No, there was no death, disease, or bloodshed in the world before sin.  The fossil record cannot be millions of years old.  On this, the Bible is clear: our loving God created the earth in six days about 6,000 years ago.

What Is Sin?

Many Christians say that the Book of Genesis is not essential to the gospel.  They say that as long as people Tbelieve in Christ Jesus and what He did on the Cross.  That is all that is really essential to the gospel!

Imagine a Christian, though, whose church teaches that Genesis is not essential, as long as we just tell people about Jesus, that is all that is important.  Imagine the following possible conversation as that person tries to witness to a skeptic.

“Sir, it is essential that you believe in Jesus.”

“Who is He?” replies the skeptic.

“Well, He is the Son of God,” states the Christian, “and He died for your sins so you can go to heaven.”

“Why did He do that?  What is sin?  Why am I not going to heaven already?”  the skeptic asks.

The Christian then says, “There is this story in Genesis about Adam and Eve sinning and being removed from the  presence of God because of their sin.  But it is probably just a myth.  Don’t worry about that, just trust in Jesus.”

Imagine, however, this much more effective response from a Christian who accepts the history of Genesis.

The Christian replies, “Well, from Genesis we learn that the first man Adam rebelled against a command of the Creator.  This ‘original sin’ separated him and all of his descendants, including you and me, from the holy and righteous Creator God, who cannot let sin, any sin, go unpunished.  The punishment for sin is death, eternal separation from God.  As children of Adam, each one of us is in rebellion against God.  We have all disobeyed His commands and as a result, deserve death.  However, the good news is that God sent His Son Christ Jesus to pay the penalty of sin on our behalf.  When we repent and accept Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we will receive His free gift of eternal life!"

The history of Genesis and original sin are absolutely foundational and essential to fully understanding the gospel.

Did Jesus Allow For A Gap?

If you carefully study the words of Christ Jesus, He made it plain that there cannot be a gap of billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.

In Mark 10:6, Jesus said, “But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female.”  In these very words, Jesus clearly teaches that Adam and Eve were created in “the beginning of the creation”, and not after billions of years had passed.  Also, the expression “beginning of the creation” rules out any “re-creation” or “second start” as taught by many gap theorists.

The main reason that people try to place a gap between the first two verses of Genesis is to accommodate the supposed billions of years for the earth’s age.  When one does this, he is essentially placing more faith in secular (i.e., without God) understanding than in God’s infallible Word.

Christ Jesus made it plain that such a compromise cannot be done!  And we should follow His understanding and His words.  Because, after all, He is the author of creation and the Word made flesh!

Evolutionist Quote of the Month

“It becomes clear now that the whole justification of Jesus’ life and death is predicated on the existence of Adam and the forbidden fruit he and Eve ate. Without the original sin, who needs to be redeemed? Without Adam’s fall into a life of constant sin terminated by death, what purpose is there to Christianity? None.”

 G. Richard Bozarth, The Meaning of Evolution, American Atheist, p. 30, September 20, 1979.
