How Did the Tower of Babel Look?

The simple answer is that the Bible does not tell us. All we know is that God intervened before the construction project was completed. Studying the oldest buildings from the area, archaeologists assume the Tower at Babel looked like a ziggurat.

But we cannot just study later buildings and calculate backward. The people at Babel had a unique opportunity. The incredible engineering skills of all mankind were together in one place. But when God split them up, each family took their talents with them. It would appear that the later founders of Babylon and Egypt lacked the expertise of their forefathers.

We can only imagine what their original plans looked like. Perhaps they designed an enormous city that would require a very long to complete. Considering how long their ancestors lived before the Flood, they probably expected to live several hundred years.

It is also possible that they had unique construction materials available after the Flood. Thick layers of lime and other sediments may not have hardened. Perhaps these materials could be formed into bricks as strong as the concrete blocks we make today.

Here is another thought. If the plans at Babel were so majestic, why do we not find any remains today? It seems likely that God frustrated their work in the early stages, while they were still laying out the city and constructing brickworks.

Is Man Destroying the Earth?

It is undoubtedly true that scientists have developed all sorts of deadly weapons that could wreak havoc on this earth. However, there is something we should always keep in mind. No matter what man tries to do, God is always in total control.

The Bible tells us that the earth will be destroyed one day. 2 Peter 3:10-13 tells us:

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting to the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. KJV ER

But this is not a description of man destroying himself with nuclear weapons, but a description of the final judgment by God on this planet.

Just as God judged the wickedness of man in the days of Noah with a global judgment of water, and at the Tower of Babel with confusion, so too He will judge again, the next time by fire.

Because so many people have rejected the truth of God’s Word, and the fact of His creation, they are more fearful of what man can do, and their gloomy predictions of the future. Instead, they should be fearing the coming judgment of our Creator and Redeemer, the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

Flood Legends From Around the World

In Genesis 6 and Numbers 13, which cover the pre-Flood and post-Flood times list the term “Nephilim”, which has been the center of discussion for many years. At this point, the identity of the Nephilim and the sons of God is still being debated in Christian circles. There is a popular unbiblical view that the Nephilim are space aliens. Of course, most creationists rightly reject this particular view for multiple reasons.

Of the views with some biblical support, some believe that fallen angels bred with women and resulted in giants called Nephilim. Some believe the sons of God were the result of fallen angels who overtook ungodly men to breed with women.

Some believe they were the Sethites, descendants of Seth, the son of Adam. There are some minor views as well, such as kings, rulers, or heads of leading family groups as being godly from Psalm 82. This view has many similarities to the Sethite view but eliminates many of Seth’s descendants and merely keeps with the leaders/kings, as well as some other leaders of other tribes, as godly. Another variation of the Sethite view is that these godly men had relations with ungodly women, and the offspring followed after other “gods” as opposed to God, and “fell away” in tremendous ways. This is called the “fallen men” view.

There is a great deal of confusion over the word Nephilim. No one today really knows what it means. It is related to the verb series “to fall” (naphal) in Hebrew, which is why some direct this to fallen angels or more appropriately, their offspring. However, this also gives strong support to the view that men had fallen away from God. It was these two concepts that helped give rise to the various views mentioned above.

Many have associated the Nephilim with giants. The King James Version translates it as giants from the influence of the Latin Vulgate. There may have been some influence on the Latin Vulgate by the Septuagint’s (Greek translation of the Old Testament about 200–300 years before Christ) use of Greek word gigentes.
